Laugh Until it Hurts

I have always loved laughing.  At any given moment I might break out into a hysterical laugh with my family, friends or my hilarious co-workers.  I guess I am blessed because after doing a little research on laughter, I discovered that those of us who can laugh on a dime probably take it for granted, as many people apparently aren’t laughing.  People are stressed, depressed and just going through the motions of life without stopping to smell the roses.  It’s for this reason laughter researchers exist.

According to some of the research I have encountered, laughing is always a good thing.  Further, actual research has been conducted, which has observed the blood pressure and glucose levels of people before and after being shown comedies.  The outcome of the observations has revealed both a reduction of blood pressure and glucose levels. This is great, yet; unfortunately laughing doesn’t come naturally for all.  However, it is important to practice laughing and anything else, which lowers stress levels, to ward off mental health/physical problems and to slow down the aging process.  Still not convinced? Check out the below information, I retrieved from WebMD:

Laughter’s Effects on the Body:

Blood flow:     Researchers at the University of Maryland studied the effects on blood vessels when  people were shown either comedies or dramas. After the screening, the blood vessels of
the group who watched the comedy behaved normally-- expanding and contracting easily. But the blood vessels in people who watched the drama tended to tense up, restricting blood flow.

Immune response: Increased stress is associated with decreased immune system response. Some studies have shown that the ability to use humor may raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body and boost the levels of immune cells, as well.

What is BB Cream?

If you have been wondering why you have been hearing about BB creams lately. More importantly, if you have been wondering what BB cream is, this post is especially for you. BB cream was first formulated in the 1960’s by a German dermatologist, whose intent was to create a product for patients to cover their skin after laser procedures. In the 1980’s, the product was introduced to Japan and Korea. Because Asian women believe in healthy, porcelain-like skin, the cream’s popularity resonated quickly among Asian women.

BB cream has recently become extremely popular in the United States and is typically marketed as an all-in-one product, which can be used as primer, moisturizer, foundation, serum and sunblock. The claims are that the cream treats blemishes, sun spots and age spots, as many formulations have skin lightening properties. The cream is also said to have anti-inflammatory and skin regenerating properties, which some experts question. Nonetheless, numerous cosmetic lines currently sold in the United States are now selling their own formulation of BB cream. The good thing is since BB creams have gained popularity outside of Asia, more color variations are now offered compared to previous years.

1 Quick Tip for Mature Women

Frost, shimmer or anything too colorful and super bold should not be worn on the eyes of mature women. Simply stated.

Did Dolce and Gabbana Go Too Far with their Black African Earrings and Garb? Is the Collection Racist?

Dolce and Gabbana's Spring 2013 runway show included something quite unexpected, black figurine faces on earrings and dresses worn by their models as they strutted down the runway (clears throat).  Now, were the earrings hot? I think so.  Will some find this collection offensive?  More than likely.  I think those who do find the collection offensive will have a basis, due to the origin of the figurines, which does not come from the most positive place.  According to MadameNoire.comDomenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, indicated this collection was inspired by their homeland, Sicily.

Sicily was inhabited by Black Moors, black Africans typically from North Africa, who were said to have invaded Sicily. Yet, the original Blackamoore statues depicted Africans as decorated slaves/servants.  This is questionable.  I can't fathom a people, who have the capability to invade a country being slaves/servants.  Moreover, if they actually invaded Sicily why were they depicted as slaves/servants? As you can see, I am somewhat confused about who the Black Moors were and, unfortunately, accurate information on this topic is limited.   However, I will be researching this topic more extensively.

Nevertheless, while I do think Dolce and Gabbana walked a very fine line with the controversial earrings, I personally am not offended.  Apparently, the statues are common in Sicily and as Huffingtonpost.com so eloquently stated, perhaps Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were simply taken by the beauty of the ebony figurines and meant no harm.  Additionally, to their credit, black African heads were accompanied by Asian head earrings as well.  The figurines were of Asian men with their heads wrapped, which is a typical characteristic of the Blackamoore statues.  Strange.

Scandal Returns on September 27th

Shonda Rhimes, thankfully, decided to grace us with a second season of Scandal. If you missed the first season you can catch up by visiting ABC . You have two days before Scandal premieres on ABC at 10p.m. I hope Season 2 is hot and heavy like Season 1. And is it possible for Ms. Olivia Pope to be anymore Divalicious than in Season 1? I can't wait to find out.

I’m Sorry I Didn’t Mean to Surprise You

Did you know your eyebrow shape can affect your overall appearance? I always stress the importance of clean arched brows. However, creating the right brow shape is critical. If you are not careful, the shape of your brows can make you appear surprised (arched too high), unapproachable (filled in too heavily), angry (filled in too heavily and close together), sad (outer brow dragged down too far) or just plain scary. I caution you to pay close attention to how your eyebrow shape changes your appearance. The best way to avoid an epic fail is to be gradually fill in your brows in a feather-like motion. The goal is to create a naturally filled in brow. It's nothing wrong with keeping the brows soft but defined. Good Luck!!!

8 Quick Steps to Create Flirty, Sensual Eyes

Whether you have a hot dinner date or you plan to meet up with your girlfriends for a girl’s night out, the right eye make-up is a must. Following the below steps will assist you with creating effortless, smokin’ hot eyes:

1) Prep the eyes with eye primer or concealer (whatever your preference).

2) Apply a neutral shadow all over the lid to set the primer or concealer

3) Using a soft crease brush, sweep a soft brown or taupe color in your crease. Be sure to blend. Your crease should be soft, yet pronounced.

4) Using a darker color (brown, gray, navy, plum, etc.) , apply your shadow in a V-motion to the outer-corners of your eyelids.

5) Continue blending until you achieve a sensual, smoky effect. Don’t be scared to sweep the shadow in and out as much as you desire. However, If you do sweep the shadow out, remember to sweep in an upward motion.

6) For more drama, intensify the corners with a black shadow (still motioning in a V-motion).

7) Highlight the brow bone and eyelid, for a popping effect (avoid anything shimmery, especially if pics will be taken).

8) Finish your eyes off by lining the top and bottom lid with a Kohl black liner, and smudge bottom lids with the same shadow used to create smoke in the outer-corners of your eyes.

Kim always has great eye make-up.

Seasonal Flu Vaccine Protects Both Mom and Baby

Getting a "flu" vaccine during pregnancy is safe for both the mother and her unborn baby and can protect both of them from the influenza virus infection and its possible consequences.

Health complications resulting from influenza infection, such as pneumonia, can be serious and even deadly, according to the March of Dimes, which recommends that pregnant women, and women who expect to become pregnant, get an annual "flu" shot.

Shopping for Foundation Can Be So Overwhelming

With all of the various textures, shades and brands of foundation on the market, making the best selection can be quite overwhelming for consumers. However, the secret to finding the best shade of foundation is approaching it the “Old Fashioned” way. Simply testing the make-up by trying as many selections as possible at your nearest make-up counter or store is always the best way to go. I do believe in purchasing drug store products; yet, doing so when attempting to find a true match or a complimentary shade of foundation is not necessarily the best decision. Drug stores are filled with a plethora of discounted make-up products; unfortunately, consumers are unable to actually test the products. So, unless you are familiar with a particular foundation, I suggest leaving the product in the drug store, even with its’ enticing prices.

Survey Reveals Mothers Rely Heavily on Caffeine and Sugar to Stay Energized Throughout the Day

Motherhood is the ultimate endurance sport, requiring incredible stamina, energy and dedication. While moms focus on keeping their families healthy and strong, the majority fall short when it comes to fueling their own bodies. A national survey commissioned by FRS, a company which produces a line of Healthy Performance products, found that the number one obstacle moms face is a lack of energy, and to help them get through the day, most turn to beverages loaded with caffeine and sugar.

According to Livestrong.com, the experts indicate the stimulants in most traditional energy drinks do not provide energy. Rather, they use energy by producing a stress response in the body to create an illusion of increased endurance, and ultimately make the body more tired. Additionally, experts say the effects of combining caffeine and sugar, found in many energy drinks, can cause a crash in blood sugar levels and an imbalance in glucose levels.

Fire Thongs

Some women wear thongs for sex appeal; others wear them to eliminate an obvious panty line. But is it healthy to constantly wear thongs? Unfortunately, according to several articles I have stumbled upon, it is not healthy. Continuously wearing thongs can result in yeast infections, chafed skin, possible UTI’s (not proven), and in some rare instances thrush, a fungal infection usually found in the mouth or the vagina, has been reported by some thong wearers. If you have a drawer full of thongs and you are adamant about wearing them, I suggest giving it a rest every now and then. Try alternating your thongs with regular panties occasionally. Also, try to avoid wearing thongs when working out, mainly because exercising tends to increase friction in the buttocks region. Friction, sweat and heat are a tragedy waiting to happen. Why is this important? You should work hard to protect your female region from any type of infection, as infections can result in irritation, rashes, and odor, none of which are attractive. For the men, who are reading this post, I hope this information will make you a little more empathetic or at least alter your expectations.

Coolway Wins 2012 Allure Best of Beauty Breakthrough Award

Coolway Hair Styling System which was honored as a 2012 Beauty Breakthrough of the year. The coveted awards feature the year's most innovative products that utilize advancements in technology and science to solve everyday beauty woes.

The Coolway AutoSense™ Styler uses low heat for all hair types and unlike typical (and damaging) flat irons, it will not evaporate the moisture within hair. Instead, it measures hair's moisture level and automatically sets to the ideal temperature required to seal in moisture while styling and protecting the hair. This is important because research proves that styling tools operating at 320 degrees F or higher damage the hair. With flat irons reaching temperatures of 450 degrees F, hair looks smooth and shiny, but only temporarily. The hair's moisture has evaporated, and it becomes dry and brittle, pulling moisture in, quickly leading to frizz. Then, high heat is reapplied to smooth the hair, leading to additional damage. The vicious cycle continues and with each treatment the hair deteriorates further. Coolway stops this cycle by styling hair only at temperatures lower than 299 degrees F, proven by research to not damage hair, and maintaining the moisture in the hair to keep it stronger, and frizz free.

I really liking the sound of this system. I am going to have to order one.

Refer to Women's Health for the complete list.

Edy's Fruit Bars: Coconut, Pineapple, Orange Variety Pack: Real fruit pieces flavor these sweet tropical pops and help keep your blood sugar from skyrocketing.

CONDIMENTS:

Wholly Salsa Classic, Medium: So fresh-tasting, you'll know the short, all-natural ingredients list isn't hiding a thing. Cilantro Flavor, backed by subtle heat, eliminates the need for added fat.

SunButter Natural No-Stir Creamy: Supercharge your next PB&J with this creamy sunflower seed spread. It's loaded with healthy fats, protein, and fiber, not to mention a slightly sweeter-than-PB roasted flavor.

MEATS & SEAFOOD:

Oscar Meyer Selects Applewood-Smoked Turkey Breast: Quit artificial preservatives cold turkey – these slices are completely free of them. And when it comes to flavor, they rival anything in the deli case.

SeaPak Shrimp Spring Rolls with Sweet Thai Chili Dipping Sauce: Toss the takeout menu—these shrimp-and-veggie filled rolls are oven-baked to crispy, golden perfection in minutes. No grease, no saturated fat, and no tip required.

FRUITS & VEGGIES:

Sunsweet 60-Calorie Packs Cherry-Essence Prunes: Single-serving fruits pumped up with cherry flavor are a good source of potassium, and a recent study linked eating dried plums to better bone health in women.

Peas of Mind Broccoli Veggie Wedgies: You're never too old to sneak more veggies into your diet, especially broccoli which is packed with cancer-fighting glucosinolates. It's a main ingredient in these oven-crisped "fries."

Quick Depuffing Tip

Tired of under eye luggage? I know I am. Besides the obvious--attempting to get more shut-eye, try dipping a black tea bag in boiling water, wait for it to cool in the fridge for a few minutes. Then, apply the wet tea bags to your puffy eyes for about ten minutes. Apparently, black tea contains tannins, which aides in deflating and tightening under eye luggage. If you are allergic to black tea or are sensitive to most herbs, please avoid trying this out. Good Luck!!! Source: Prevention Magazine

Romney Can Have Nikki Minaj, We Have Nikki Giovanni

By The Political Beauty

There’s a great saying that goes, “it’s best to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt”. Those words come to mind when I recently read an article proclaiming Ms. Nikki Minaj is a Republican. While no diehard fan, I must admit I had to click on the link to an audio of her rapping, claiming she is a Republican, and basically telling all ladies on welfare to “stop draining the economy”.

Let me be clear, I have no issue with Minaj being a Republican. Blacks are not a monolith and while we make up a small percentage of the Republican Party, there are many who believe in trickle down economics and “every man for himself”. My issue with Minaj and other black conservatives is that all too often they forget that they are products of the very government programs they now demonize: welfare, Pell Grants, GI Bill, affirmative action policies, immigration, etc. These “horrible programs” helped the poor become middle class and the middle class become upper class. To Ms. Minaj specifically, I am saddened by her words as the very “welfare recipients” she knocks are likely buying her music and fattening her pockets. I am saddened by the fact that she, a WOMAN, is choosing a party that is hell bent on controlling a woman’s body and earning potential. Granted, this could very well be a publicity stunt. On one hand she takes to Twitter to criticize the lack of universal health coverage in American and, in the same breath, knocks the poor. Who does she think is hit hardest by the lack of affordable health coverage? Shame on us for expecting more from a grown woman making millions portraying an inflated derriere having schizophrenic. Oh, did I mention that there are reports that she IS NOT a registered voter! "Hotmessness" at its best!

In closing, I encourage all not to indulge Ms. Minaj. Instead, increase our polical efficacy and understand that we are facing dire times. In an effort to increase the black vote, Romney/Ryan have created a Black Leadership Council. Perhaps I will entertain this council when the denial of systemic racism, dismissal of blacks as always using the race card, erroneous depictions of blacks as the poster child for government dependence and damn near every other social ill in America cease to exist or, at the very least, is addressed by GOP leaders. In the words of our President, don't boo the GOP...VOTE!

Let Romney have Nikki Minaj, we have Nikki Giovanni. Forward 2012...

African American Women and Cervical Cancer

According to a recent article provided by the National Cancer Institute, cervical cancer rates have fallen in African American women, however, African Americans' chances of developing the disease are about 39 percent higher than those of white women, and are twice as likely to die from the disease. These disparities are seen even though screening rates are similar in African American and white women. The poorer outcomes in African American women could result from poorer quality screening or inadequate follow up tests when abnormal results come from screening. So in addition to making sure to get screened, it is very important to find out your test results and to make sure to get any needed follow up tests or procedures.

The reason that cases of cervical cancer and deaths from this disease have gone down is that more and more women are getting the Pap test, a simple procedure that lets your doctor find cells in your cervix that have changed in ways that could eventually develop into cancer.

Many experts recommend that women have a Pap test every 3 years beginning at age 21. In women over age 30, screening with both a Pap test and a test to detect cancer-causing types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is recommended. Infections with certain types of HPV cause essentially all cervical cancer. HPV can be transmitted during many kinds of sexual contact, even when a condom is used, and HPV infections are very common. However, most infections go away on their own. Infections that do not go away on their own can cause cells to become abnormal and, eventually, cancer. But if abnormal or precancerous cells are found early, they can be treated before they become cancer.

**The above information was obtained from an article provided by the National Cancer Institute's monthly Lifelines education and awareness print series.

Coping Skills and Marital Satisfaction Help Pregnant Mothers Manage Stress of Prenatal Diagnosis of Congenital Heart Defects

According to new research from the Cardiac Center of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, expectant mothers who learn from prenatal diagnosis that they are carrying a fetus with a congenital heart defect (CHD) commonly suffer post-traumatic stress, depression and anxiety. However, a healthy relationship with one's partner and positive coping mechanisms can reduce this intense stress.

Rihanna Goes Short

Rihanna is known to make very bold statements with her hair, which I love. Well, tonight she revealed a very soft, subtle haircut tonight at the VMAs. And her hair was black!!! She was absolutely stunning in a long, white, backless dress. Rihanna is clearly hot with long or short hair. Simply beautiful.

6 Steps to Achieving Perfect Top Liner

Have you been wanting to create a perfectly lined top lid? Do you envy women who are able to line their top lids perfectly? Well, envy no more. Following the below steps will make life a lot easier:

1) Start with selecting the right brush. My preference is an angle brush or an eyeliner brush.

2) Select a liquid liner or gel liner.

3) Using a mirror, begin with anchoring your elbow on a table or if you are pretty good stand in front of a mirror without anchoring your elbow.

4) Try anchoring your pinky finger on your face. This trick works like a charm.

5) Beginning from the outer lid, try drawing three short lines instead of drawing one continuous line.

6) Connect the lines as if you are connecting dots.

Voila!!! Following the above steps should help you achieve the sultry, lined eyes you have been desiring.

4 Must-Have Brushes

You may prefer to use your fingers or Q-tips when applying your make-up. However, keep in mind, achieving the best result is contingent upon your tools. Therefore, if you plan on building a make-up brush arsenal, my recommendation is to start with the following four brushes:

1) Face Powder Brush- Use for powder foundation, blush, bronzers

2) Angle Brush- Great for filling in brows and lining the top lid with liquid/gel liners

3) Lid Brush- Use for applying eye shadows

4) Soft Crease Brush- Great for defining a perfect crease

Your make-up brush investment does not have to break the bank. As a matter of fact, I really like using Sonia Kashuk brushes, which are inexpensive and can be purchased at Target.

FLOTUS

By The Political Beauty

Poise, eloquence, grace, and strength are a few of the many words that can describe our beautiful First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama. Listening to Mrs. Obama speak last night conjured the same goose bumps I felt as she stepped on the stage in 2008 as her husband accepted the United States Presidency.

Mrs. Obama is such a great role model for all women. To hear her speak about her father, a blue-collar worker who did not let muscular dystrophy diminish his work ethic and ability to care for his family was breathtaking. As one whose father died when I was six, I found myself living vicariously through her words—if only for a few minutes. To hear Mrs. Obama speak about balancing family obligations was something so many of us moms understand. Being a working mom is a constant juggling act and one in which you find yourself questioning if you are doing the best for your children and husband. Unlike Mrs. Obama, we do so without an unrelenting microscope.

According to Mrs. Obama, “success is not about how much money you make, but how you impact people’s lives”. These powerful words coming from a woman who chose a lower paying and more fulfilling career rather than a lucrative career that an Ivy League education all but guarantees—and that was long before she became our First Lady and President Obama garnered wealth as a best selling author.

While I know she will likely not read this, I (as well as others) would like to thank her for being the wife, mom, and America I strive to emulate. Thanks for championing childhood obesity. Thanks for championing military families. Thanks for maintaining a level of sophistication in the face of adversity. Thanks for possessing an inner beauty that equally matches your outward beauty. As I listened to you and the “happy tears” flowed from my eyes, I was reminded of how great this country is and how much I love her.

Now on a light note, Mrs. Obama, do tell us more about that fabulous nail polish you were wearing. Hair, dress, shoes, and make up were FLAWLESS!
